The Benefits of Multivitamins You Did Not Know
Vitamins and Minerals Are Good For You
Everyone knows that there are many vitamins and minerals that we require on a daily basis to keep us going strong. In fact the most basic benefit of multivitamins is that it protects us from vitamin deficiencies (and mineral deficiencies) which can lead to a whole host of problems. However studies in recent years have shown that there are many more benefits of multivitamins than just protection from malnutrition.
Benefits of Multivitamins
There was a time when some would argue that there were few, if any, major health benefits from taking multivitamins. While taking multivitamins might be important for those unable to achieve proper intake of nutrients from their diet, it was not seen as something that could have a significant impact on your health.
The newest studies, however, are showing that there are in fact many benefits of multivitamins. For example, one study showed that multivitamin supplementation in seniors reduces Medicare costs significantly, at the time of the study (a couple of years ago), it was estimated that $1.6 million dollars would be saved over a 5 year period from the use of multivitamins. This benefit of multivitamins did not include potential cost savings from hospitalization involving heart disease or cancer.
But it has been shown that some of the benefits of multivitamins include reducing risk of heart disease, cancer, even infections. By keeping a proper balance of nutrients in the body at all times, our bodies are better able to function and better able to maintain their health and fight off problems such as cardiovascular disorders and invading infections, and including in some part fighting off cancer.
Benefits of Different Multivitamins
The studies leading to the results mentioned above generally focused on traditional multivitamins, such as those you would find in your local grocery store. However with the explosion of the supplementation world, many new types of multivitamins have come on the market, all promising a host of varying benefits.
It can sometimes be difficult to understand the true impact of these varying multivitamins, especially considering that conclusive studies have not been done of all of these differing supplements. The true benefits of herbal multivitamins, for example, have yet to be gaged against traditional multivitamins, as well as multivitamins boasting a host of varying supplements outside of the traditional essential vitamins and minerals.
If you wish to achieve the benefits of multivitamins, sticking with the traditional brands you know is most likely the best idea, at least for now. The benefits of these multivitamins are well understood, and it is hard to mess up when going with them. However, there are many other supplements out there that also offer a wide range of benefits which could help you as well, depending upon your own personal needs.
