Getting Your Estrogen Level Right With Estrogen Herbal Supplements

Low Estrogen Levels

Numerous scientific studies have been done showing the potential damaging effects of low estrogen levels in the body, as well as the benefits of estrogen supplementation.  While most women are worried about estrogen levels during and after menopause, some women have problems with their estrogen levels for their entire lives.  Estrogen herbal supplements are a natural solution to keeping proper estrogen levels in your body.

Phytoestrogens and Estrogen Herbal Supplements

The most commonly used estrogen herbal supplements are generally based in one of the following three herbs, or a combination thereof: Black Cohosh, Dong Quai and Red Clover.  These three herbs are used because they contain elements known as phytoestrogens.

So what exactly are phytoestrogens, and why are they used in estrogen herbal supplements?  Generally an estrogen herbal supplement will contain chemically derived estrogens to supplement the estrogen levels in your body.  Phytoestrogens, on the other hand, are completely natural.

As you might be able to guess, phytoestrogen essentially means plant estrogen.  (Phyto means plant).  This is not exactly the same as the estrogen that is found in our bodies, but it is an equivalent hormone that is found in many plants and herbs.  The herbs found to have the highest levels of phytoestrogen are the three listed above: Black Cohosh, Dong Quai and Red Clover.  It is for this reason that they are so commonly used in estrogen herbal supplements.

Are Estrogen Herbal Supplements Safe?

Before beginning any routine involving estrogen herbal supplements, you should first consult a doctor.  Estrogen supplements have been shown to cause some potentially damaging effects in women, including increasing the risk of breast cancer.  While phytoestrogens differ from estrogen, they are similar enough that many doctors are concerned about their use.

Studies have also shown that in some women, estrogen supplements can increase the risk of blood clots and potentially harm cardiovascular health.  However, since phytoestrogens again differ from estrogen, it has not been completely concluded whether or not phytoestrogen carries the same danger.

There are many benefits derived from the use of estrogen herbal supplements, however there are potential risks as well.  Educate yourself on both the benefits and risks of estrogen herbal supplements and consult a physician before beginning any sort of major regime involving the use of these sorts of herbal supplements.
