Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Glucosamine?

Glucosamine is a supplement that is becoming more and more popular.  You can find it in pills, powders, liquids, and tasty fruit supplement drinks.  It can also be combined with chondroitin.  The reason people use glucosamine is because they have problems with their joints.  Often times, it will be used for the treatment of osteoarthritis.  It is made from crab shells mixed with chondroitin.  The chondroitin comes from cow trachea.  It seems harmless enough, but there is reason to believe that you should not take too much of this supplement.

How Much Is Enough?

Most experts agree that glucosamine has shown to be helpful to treat damaged joint cartilage, although it is not a concrete fact at this point.  Most people who use the supplement will talk about 1500mg of the glucosamine, which is usually combined with 1200mg of chondroitin.  This is suggested as the dosage for the first two months of treatment and should be taken each day.  After the first few months, the dosage should be reduced just a bit. Most bottles of the supplement will tell you how much you should take, but keep in mind that this is not an FDA approved supplement at this point.

What Will Happen If You Take Too Much?

Experts are unsure what might happen if you take too much glucosamine.  However, they do speculate a few things.  They think that if someone takes too much, they may have gastrointestinal discomfort, increased risk of bleeding, blood sugar elevation, or more.  Those people who are diabetic, allergic to shellfish, or on blood thinner might be in even more of a risk.  These individuals should probably not take glucosamine at all. The best thing you can do is talk to your doctor about taking glucosamine and any effects it may have on your body.
