What You Should Know About Multivitamins And Pregnancy

Keeping Your Body Healthy

No matter what time of our lives it is, it is always important to keep our bodies healthy.  However this need is never so important nor felt so heavily than when we are with child.  Having a life dependent upon you changes your perspectives in so many ways.  Many women look to multivitamin supplements to give them the nutrition they need, but there are some things you should know about multivitamins and pregnancy.

Multivitamins And Pregnancy

One should think that there should be no problems with multivitamins and pregnancy, should there?  For the most part no, there isn't, but there are some important things to take into consideration.  For one thing, although multivitamins are a good thing, they might not be exactly what you need during your pregnancy.  You might find yourself better served taking prenatal vitamins than multivitamins during pregnancy.

Why is that?  Because prenatal vitamins are specifically designed to give you the nutrients you need the most of to foster the growth of a strong, healthy baby.  These include most prominently: folic acid, iron and calcium.

If you are taking prenatal vitamins, then you very likely will not want to take multivitamins on top of that during your pregnancy.  Depending on what is included in the prenatal vitamins and the multivitamins you might find yourself overloading your system, which is not a good thing at any time, especially during pregnancy.

Multivitamins And Pregnancy: Talk To Your Doctor

Before beginning any vitamin regime it is best to discuss the matter over with your doctor.  Your doctor will be able to give you the best information about multivitamins and pregnancy, as well as come to conclusions about your own specific vitamin needs.  All of us our different, and our bodies react differently to different situations.

Your doctor might decide that a multivitamin is all you need to keep your nutrition levels proper during your pregnancy.  However, he might find that you need more folic acid in your diet, and prescribe prescription strength prenatal vitamins.  You cannot buy these over the counter and must first consult a physician.  Ask your doctor if you can take a multivitamin with a prescription prenatal.

If you are on any other medications, you should also discuss taking multivitamins during your pregnancy.  It is possible, depending on what medications you are taking, that certain elements in the multivitamins could give you problems.  Discuss the matter over with your doctor so you can come to the best decision about multivitamins and your pregnancy.
