And federal agencies don’t police “natural” vitamins to make sure they are what they say they are.

Experts don’t always agree that natural vitamins are better than man-made or synthetic vitamins. Synthetic vitamins are cheaper. Experts at the Mayo Clinic say that synthetic and natural vitamins are usually the same when it comes to how well they work. According to Consumer Reports, the best vitamin is a reputable multivitamin, either name brands or cheaper store brands. Proponents of organic food contend that it’s worth to pay extra money for top-grade natural organic vitamins. Ronnie Cummins, president of the non-profit Organic Consumers Association, says that if at least 95 percent of the ingredients of a vitamin are from an organic food source, that product may use the U.S.D.A. organic seal. But almost all experts agree on one thing: the best source of natural organic vitamins is from eating healthy food.

Cummins tells consumers to read the labels carefully. If a product says it’s a natural organic vitamin, he says to look for the U.S.D.A. seal and then ask the manufacturer to produce the paperwork proving organic certification. According to Cummins, too many products are labeled as organic and are not.
