Your Guide For Using Vitamin A, As An Antioxidant

All About Antioxidants

Of all the things that scientists have begun to properly understand and study when it comes to our bodies, antioxidants are one of the things that have come to the forefront of the public imagination and understanding.  Free radicals, those unstable molecules that threaten to destabilize our entire body's health, are destroyed by antioxidants, making them very potent weapons indeed.

Looking For Vitamin A As An Antioxidant

Vitamin A is a very important vitamin.  It plays roles in vision, bone growth, reproduction, cell division, cell differentiation, and is even vital in our immune systems.  What you might not know is that Vitamin A can also serve as a very powerful antioxidant.

We can get Vitamin A from two sources in our diet.  One is from animal products, most commonly liver, milk, etc.  This is also the form of Vitamin A that is most commonly found in vitamin supplements.  This form of Vitamin A does not have the strongest antioxidant properties, however.

The second source of Vitamin A is from deeply colored red, yellow, and orange vegetables, which are loaded with pigments known as carotenoids.  Caretenoids are well-known antioxidants, and they also contain Vitamin A.

If you are looking to use Vitamin A as an antioxidant, it is best then to look for it from caretenoid sources.  Most specifically you should be looking for beta-carotene.  It has very strong antioxidant properties, and has also been shown to be the best caretenoid to most efficiently convert to Vitamin A.

Where To Get Vitamin A Caretenoids

Many vitamin and multivitamin supplements have begun to supply at least some of their Vitamin A from beta-carotene or, less often, other caretenoid sources.  However if you are looking to get beta-carotene Vitamin A antioxidants from your diet, there are places you should look.

Carrots, spinach, kale and apricots are all excellent sources of Vitamin A (beta-carotene).  Like so often, richly colored fruits and vegetables as well as deep green leafy vegetables are often the best place to turn to first when looking for the best in nutrients.
