Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States.  Not far behind is cancer, in its various forms.  Both of these are major issues that threaten the health of Americans everyday, especially older Americans.  Vitamin E, one of the essential vitamins, has been shown to help prevent both heart disease and some forms of cancer.

The Basics of Vitamin E

Vitamin E could very well be one of the must important nutrients that we humans take in from our diet.  It is an essential vitamin, meaning that our bodies cannot produce this substance ourselves.  However, unlike some vitamins, Vitamin E deficiency is exceedingly rare, if not in fact completely unheard of.  It is so prevalent in so many foods that it is very difficult not to get at least the minimum of Vitamin E required for healthy living.

Because it is a fat-soluble vitamin, some wonder if it is possible to overdose on Vitamin E.  However, studies have not been able to show any toxicity results from toxicity of Vitamin E.  It seems, for the most part, that it is also very difficult if not impossible to overdose on Vitamin E.

Vitamin E and Your Health

In recent years the many health benefits of Vitamin E supplementation have been greatly touted in the public eye, and many studies have been undertaken to prove its effects.  In some respects these studies have been contradictory or inconclusive, although there is a general trend to show that Vitamin E supplementation does aid our health in a variety of ways.

Some might wonder why, if Vitamin E is so prevalent in food, do we require Vitamin E supplementation?  Although we get enough Vitamin E in our diet for basic functioning, many of the benefits of Vitamin E are not displayed until we have much more of this important antioxidant in our system.

For example, it has been shown that Vitamin E supplementation assists in the lowering of LDL cholesterol, protecting us from blockages in the arteries that can lead to heart attacks.  It has also been shown in some studies to reduce the appearance of blood clots.

However, some studies have not shown this correlation to be as high as some think.  In fact, some studies have shown that Vitamin E has absolutely no impact on coronary disease or cardiovascular health.  These were relatively short-term studies, though, and some believe that the results of longer-term studies will show that in the long haul Vitamin E supplementation does have a number of benefits when it comes to cardiovascular health.

Fighting Against Cancer

Many more studies have been linking Vitamin E supplementation with the reduction of risk for cancer.    One study in Iowa showed that Vitamin E supplementation reduced the risk of women for colon cancer, especially for women under the age of 65.

The American Cancer Society ran a long-term study lasting ten years on the reduction rates of both Vitamin C and Vitamin E supplementation on bladder cancer.  While no results were seen from regular Vitamin C supplementation, those who took Vitamin E were seen to have a reduced risk of bladder cancer.

Some have also linked Vitamin E supplementation to reducing the risk of other cancers as well, including prostate cancer and breast cancer.  Significant corroborative evidence does not exist at this point, however, to say this definitively.
